To ride or not to ride?

As I attempt to recover from a hip flexor injury, I'm faced with question to ride or drive. Walking at times is incredibly painful, climbing stairs can start a spasm, but biking does not increase the pain. But does this movement inhibit the healing process?

I do continue to commute by bike for the majority of my work shifts and have switched to the car when off to familial or gym events.

Physio has prescribed several stretches and exercises to strengthen the deep but tiny muscles that hold my hip together. I am hopeful that I will see improvement soon.

As for rides I have completed a 75 km day last week, along a converted railbed call the Kissing Bridge trail. We as a family have cycled this trail quite often and I enjoy it immensely. I'm down to 1500 km to meet the goal of 3650 km of measured rides by year end. This should be doable.

Good night for now.

Injuries

I have been dealing with some pretty severe pain in my lower back lately. I have been to the doctor and physio-therapist and I am on a series of stretches and muscle building moves to strengthen my core muscles.

It was a matter of time was the phrase the family doctor told me. I'm too tall and thin and am now feling the effects of my lanky body. However, I ride on.

My goal is to right 100 km a week and to put on 3650 km on the Uno this year. The latter challenge is the most difficult. We shall see.

Evening ride

I rode the bike in tonight. Light rain, few pedestrians, and the wind at my back. Unfortunately not all rides are as quiet and comfortable. I am enjoying the cool July temperatures and I love the long range forecast of 20 to 25 degree temperatures.

Introduction

As I attempt to decide what to write, I think I should say who I am.

I am the father of two energetic children who enjoy cycling with me.  We have completed 90 km rides for charity together as a family as well as simply doing all errands for the week by bike within the confines of Guelph.

I commute to work by bike year round, and although it is only 4.5 km one way, it still presents a challenge during inclement weather.  My riding and life partner, Roberta Vriesema, is also a regular commuter and exercise partner.

The purpose of this blog will be to record rides and other fun or interesting events that occur in my cycling life.

The plans for today include taking my son to a friends house in the south end of the city by bike and returning home to prep for a 4 hour OT shift at work.  Should be about a 40 km day or so.  It maybe a cold ride, but we will see.
